Also known as the Lucky bean tree this is an attractive medium size deciduous tree to 12 m. often seen in the Nairobi area when in flower showing its red hot pokers at the end of the dry season. The bark is thick, fissured and corky often with thick spines. The leaves are large and trifoliate, flowering is followed by seed pods bearing bright red seeds, which are poisonous. Suitable for dry areas between 900 and 2,200 m
